Movement disorders are a group of nervous system conditions that cause you to have abnormal voluntary or involuntary movements, or slow, reduced movements.
Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) uses a surgically implanted, battery-operated medical device to deliver electrical stimulation to specific areas in the brain that control movement. This blocks the abnormal nerve signals that cause symptoms.
Researchers at the Bionics Institute have discovered a unique brain signal (a biomarker) in patients receiving DBS implants for the treatment of Parkinson’s disease. Using this signal, we aim to improve the outcomes of deep brain stimulation treatment.
